Artist in Residency

Each year, N-CODE (alongside SMQB at the University of Birmingham) proudly hosts an Artist in Residency scheme where artists with varying backgrounds, lived experience and expertise are paired with a Seedcorn research project.
You can find more information on this year’s funded projects here.
The artist works with their team of scientists to interpret the research into art form. Both artist and scientists find this collaboration rewarding as the artist is able to offer new perspective to the research project, while demonstrating how science and art are interconnected.

In June 2024, we were proud to host an exhibition from the Artist in Residence programme: Encoded Realities. This took place at Centrala, Birmingham. The title ‘Encoded Realities’ alluded to the hidden or embedded principles governing various aspects of life. Through a lens bridging art, science and lived experience, this exhibition creatively explored and playfully decoded some of the hidden patterns and complexities relevant to a range of health conditions.
Overall, the exhibition showcased the work of 12 artists and 49 scientists and included work relating to the three N-CODE seedcorn projects which ran between Sept 2023-March 2024.

It bought the projects to life with artworks ranging from film, photography and paintings through to installations, sculpture and even a video game, with each piece connected to a different research project. Find out more and watch a video of the exhibition here.
